The American Dream - 955 Words

Does being American mean that you’re an American citizen, or does it mean that you have the same rights and decisions as someone who is a successful American citizen? These decisions include choices you make in order to better yourself in life, whether it has to do with your choice in career, or what you want to do in life. Making decisions, and having choices comes with freedom, as a person, and that reflects on being an American everywhere in the world, even though you’ve never been in America. To be an American means that you have the freedom, and rights to do what you want, be who you are, and be/ become who you want. This right of having the freedom to do what you want, can be elaborated by someone’s life chances. In the short story†¦show more content†¦In the essay â€Å"Growing up Asian in America† by Kesaya E. Noda, being who you are, or accepting yourself is portrayed through her own life story. â€Å"Being Japanese means being a danger to the country during the war and knowing how to use chopsticks. I wear this history on my face† (Noda 34). Living in America can be said to be great, from those who are already the average American, because they don’t deal with the everyday life of being racialized. They also don’t have the label of having another ethnicity besides being American. â€Å"Clean, quiet, motivated, and determined to match the American way; this is us, and that is the story of our time here† (Noda 35). Kesaya struggled to learn about herself and her history, due to the fact that she didn’t know much about her Japanese race. When finding out that her family had been apart of the Japanese camps, Kesaya found it easier to just go along with the American way instead of being herself because she was ashamed of herself. â€Å"I come from a people with long memory and a distinctive grace. We live our thanks. And we are Americans. Japanese- Americans† (Noda 36). Kesaya had then accepted herself as a Japanese- American because she was proud of all that her family, and all Japanese, went through. Being American isn’t just about living in America, or being a citizen, but about knowing that you belong because America is your home. An Advertisement Is Used To Promote A Message Or A Product.

An advertisement is used to promote a message or a product. Some examples of advertisements are commercials, images, and billboards. Many advertisements can have deeper messages behind them. An ad in 1945 by the Aluminum Cooking Utensil company is promoting a new aluminum pressure cooker , but targets married housewives by manipulating them into thinking the product will help them keep their husbands happy. The top half of the advertisement is an image of a women holding a man s face to kiss him while he happily reads a newspaper that states â€Å" Is there a man in your life?†. Directly underneath the main image are three smaller squared images with scenarios on how the Wear-Ever pressure cooker would help a woman s relationship. The†¦show more content†¦One recurring rhetorical feature is the use of pathos. For example, the three small squared images in the middle of the advertisement create scenes of happiness. The first image explains that the pressure cooker wou ld make her significant other believe she is â€Å"pretty wonderful†.
